Midnights…

I’m on a midnight rotation at work and people have differing opinions about it. Many people don’t like it, others absolutely despise it because they can never seem to get enough sleep, and some don’t mind it because they’ve figured out how to sleep a full eight hours during the day. Me, I’m in between. I’ve been able to sleep, I’ve been able to stay awake on shift (with the help of coffee, of course), and the work isn’t too bad. Yeah, it gets boring because there isn’t much going on at 3 AM, but I’ve been able to keep myself occupied.

There’s something to be said about being awake and actively doing things while everyone else is asleep. You get to see and hear about so much more that is going on and you realize that just because you go to sleep, doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of stuff that is going on in the world, even right in your neighborhood. While it may not be as active at night, what does happen tends to be a bit more interesting. Sometimes, the best time to be awake is while the rest of the world sleeps.

I think the worst part about midnights is trying to get anything done during the day. You’re typically very tired after getting off work so you don’t want to do much, but everything is open so you have to make the most of it before you go to sleep because once you’re up and working again, everything closes. Tonight will be my Friday so after this, I get a nice weekend off and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve done a long seven day stretch of work and it’s catching up with me. I’m looking forward to being on a normal schedule again, even if just for a couple days.
